Stain SOS: How to Treat Common Laundry Stains Like a Pro

Published on 7 April 2025 at 11:42

We've all been there—a splash of sauce, a drip of wine, or a mysterious mark on your favorite shirt. Don’t panic! Follow these quick tips to treat stains the right way and save your clothes.

1. Blot, Don’t Rub

Never rub a stain—this only pushes it deeper into the fabric fibers. Instead, blot gently with a clean cloth or paper towel to absorb as much of the stain as possible.
2. Identify the Stain
Knowing what caused the stain makes all the difference. Fresh stains are way easier to remove than dried ones, so act fast!
3. Choose Your Cleaning Solution
Here are some powerful (and often natural!) options:
Dish Soap
Great for grease, oil, and food stains. Mix a few drops with cold water, dab it onto the stain, agitate with a soft brush or sponge, let sit 30 minutes, then rinse and wash.
Vinegar
A natural disinfectant and stain fighter. Mix equal parts vinegar and water, apply, let sit a few minutes, then rinse.
Baking Soda
Perfect for odors and stains. Make a paste with water, apply to the stain, let it sit a few hours, then rinse and wash.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Ideal for blood, wine, and organic stains. Dilute with water, apply, let sit 15–20 minutes, and rinse. Test first on colored fabrics as it may bleach!
Rubbing Alcohol
Great for lifting dye and ink stains. Apply to a cotton ball and dab gently.
Cornstarch
Excellent for greasy stains. Sprinkle over the stain, let it sit overnight, then brush or vacuum it off before washing.
4. Rinse and Launder
Once the stain is treated, rinse thoroughly with cold water and launder as usual.
5. Repeat if Needed
Stubborn stain? Don’t give up! Repeat the process. Never put stained clothing in the dryer until the stain is 100% gone—heat sets it for good.
Keep this guide handy and treat stains like a laundry pro!
